What's for dinner? - Expanding the backpackers meal options Part #1.

$$$.

While I love the traditional "mountain house" style meals, at some point the average backpacker needs to find more cost effective meals. (Maybe I’m just too cheap) I’ve found some decent alternative options to just forking over the $6 to $7 per meal...

I've found with the Bear Creek meals, I can divide the package into plastic baggies and get four single servings out of them. They have more meal options, they taste comparable, and only cost about $2.40 to $3.00 per package. That's four times the food for less than half the money!

Cooking time.

Now one complaint I've heard from other hikers, is that these meals take a little longer to cook up with boiling water. While I've found that to be accurate, for me, the argument is fairly inconsequential. Why? Because when I'm in the wilderness there is one thing I never do... Check the time. I prefer to soak up my time in the woods. If my meal takes 2 to 5 minutes longer to boil than the guy sitting next to me, I could really care less. I love every minute of my excursions.

Adding on.

To boost the taste of these meals even further, I like to take along a bag of sealed chunk chicken, tuna or salmon! When you toss a bag of these into the rice or past mix, you'll be eating like a trail boss!
